On Friday, March 4, 2016, Professor Sanders presented at the University of Detroit Mercy Centennial Symposium on the Past, Present, and Future of the City of Detroit. Professor Sanders discussed Detroit's future, in specific recently announced plans to provide city-owned land for purposes of urban farming. Professor Sanders argued that "ag-gag" litigation in neighboring states could jeopardize Detroit's plan. Professor Sanders advocated and attempted to provide guiding principles for an "ag-gag" free Detroit. These principles were designed to promote constitutional rights to speech and press and were intended to ensure safe food production and fair competition among food producers.
